Nicer Government Center
Sun Chronicle

Government Center, the three-building complex that includes city hall, the police station and the old post office on the block between Union and Pine streets, is being re-landscaped as part of Mayor Kevin Dumas' long term push to beautify streets, parks and public buildings.

Dumas, who has pitched in with manual labor more than once on city projects, donned shorts and a tee shirt to help park employees Friday.

The plantings near the police station were designed to get rid of barren patches of worn out grass and provide relief from wide swaths of asphalt and concrete.

New flowers and trees have been put in around city hall and a planter stretching the length of the parking lot between the police station and the old post office is under construction.

The parking lot, itself, is being repaved and enlarged in anticipation of the opening of a branch registry of deeds office on the first floor.

The city's inspection office is located in the basement.

County Square and Maple Street are other areas that have been spiffed up with plantings over the past couple of years.

A large scale refurbishing of downtown is set to begin this summer and will include new trees, sidewalks and historical light poles.

Meanwhile, Register of Deeds Barry Amaral said the work on the branch registry is progressing. He hopes it will open in September, however it's not guaranteed.

"I can't promise that, but we're coming along pretty good," he said on Monday.
