ATTLEBORO - Register of Deeds for northern Bristol County Barry Amaral is aiming to open the long-planned satellite registry office in downtown next month.

"I'm hoping for the middle of September, if everything goes right," he said Wednesday after consulting with Mayor Kevin Dumas about the project.

The satellite office will occupy most of the first floor of the former post office building next to city hall.

Electrical work, painting and transaction counters are nearing completion.

A new parking lot has been built.

The installation of carpeting and computers are the next major projects, Amaral said.

The project has been in the works for nearly two years and got bogged down when job bids came in at about $500,000, which Amaral rejected as too expensive.

As a result, county and city workers have been doing much of the project themselves.

Amaral said Dumas has been instrumental in expediting the work.

He said Dumas has facilitated the reconstruction of the parking lot by the city's public works department, the fabrication of new stair railings by the high school's metal shop and the purchase and installation of historic lighting for the front of the building.

Dumas also helped select colors for interior painting.

"Because of his efforts we'll be able to open in September, not later," Amaral said.
